Regents Approve Construction of On-Campus Apartments
February 2008 -- The Board of Regents recently approved a $35.5 million financing authorization and the campus’s selection of a private developer, Capstone Companies of Birmingham, Alabama, to construct about 360 apartment beds for undergraduate students. Last year, the Regents authorized our campus to undertake a Request for Proposals (RFP) process, through which Capstone Companies was selected to partner with the University on this project. Capstone Companies built and manages the six South Campus Commons buildings, which provide apartment spaces for 1,825 undergraduate students who relocate from the on-campus residence halls. The Regents' action must be ratified by the State's Board of Public Works. At present, construction is expected to start later this year. A single building containing about 360 beds in 100 or so apartments will be constructed on the current site of parking lot U7 near Susquehanna Hall, the Mowatt Lane Parking Garage and South Campus Commons Building #6. The new apartments are expected to open in January 2010.
